Dasamsa D10 Chart: How to Read It for Career

By Rohan SharmaUpdated Cornerstone

The Dasamsa (D10) chart is the divisional chart in Vedic astrology that shows career, status and public role in detail. It divides each sign into ten parts of 3 degrees and rebuilds a full chart from them, with its own rising sign, houses and planets. To read it, check three things first: the D10 Lagna lord, the D10 10th house and the Sun.

The Dasamsa is also spelled Dashamsa or D-10 (दशमांश), and it is one of the sixteen vargas of the Dasamsa family of divisional charts. It is a layer inside your birth chart, not a separate horoscope, and it is not the same thing as the 10th house of the main chart.

What does the D10 chart show?

The D10 shows the texture, timing and obstacles of a working life in more detail than the birth chart's 10th house can. The 10th house of the main birth chart (the rashi, or D-1) gives the broad outline: service or business, steady or variable income, public-facing or behind-the-scenes.

The D10 zooms in on that outline. It answers a narrower set of questions the rashi alone cannot: what kind of organisation a native thrives in, their relationship to power and hierarchy, whether recognition arrives early or late, and where satisfaction actually comes from, whether money, command, public regard or service. When an astrologer is asked "should I take this offer", the D10 is what they open after the 10th house, not instead of it.

How is the D10 chart calculated?

The D10 divides each thirty-degree sign into ten parts of 3° each, and where each part maps depends on whether the occupied sign is odd or even. This is the Parashari method, which most Vedic software uses by default.

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) count from the sign itself. The first division of Aries is Aries, the tenth is Capricorn.
  • Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) count from the ninth sign from it. The first division of Taurus is Capricorn, the ninth sign from Taurus.

To place a planet, divide its degree within the sign by 3 and round up to get the division number, then count that many signs from the anchor, counting the anchor as the first. Charts on this site use the Lahiri ayanamsha and the Swiss Ephemeris (/transparency).

How to find your D10 chart

You can place any planet or your Lagna in the D10 with the same four steps.

  1. Enter your birth date, time and place in the Lagna calculator. It shows your Lagna sign and degree and the sign and degree of every planet.
  2. For the point you want to place, take its degree inside its sign and divide by 3. Round up to get the division number from 1 to 10.
  3. Choose the anchor: the sign itself if it is odd, the ninth sign from it if it is even.
  4. Count forward from the anchor by the division number, counting the anchor as 1. That sign is the point's D10 sign.

Two worked examples. A planet at 17°40' Leo: 17.67 ÷ 3 = 5.89, rounded up to division 6. Leo is odd, so the anchor is Leo, and the sixth sign from Leo is Capricorn. A planet at 25° Taurus: 25 ÷ 3 = 8.33, rounded up to division 9. Taurus is even, so the anchor is Capricorn, and the ninth sign from Capricorn is Virgo. Run the same steps on your Lagna degree to find your D10 Lagna.

What does each house mean in the D10?

Each D10 house carries its usual significations, reframed around professional life. The 10th house, status and the role you are best known for, is the single most important.

Which three D10 placements should you check first?

Check the D10 Lagna lord, the D10 10th house with its lord, and the Sun, because together they show whether the rest of the analysis is straightforward or tangled.

The D10 lagna lord. Is it in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (1st, 5th, 9th)? In its own sign, exalted, or in a friend's sign? Aspected by benefics or malefics? A D10 lagna lord well placed and well aspected is one of the most reliable signatures for a strong career arc.

The 10th house of the D10 and its lord. This is the career-of-the-career house. A strong 10th lord, well placed in the same chart, is classically read as supporting periods of recognition and advancement.

The Sun's placement. The Sun is the natural karaka for career and status. A well-placed Sun, especially in the 1st, 5th, 9th or 10th, supports a career that brings genuine recognition rather than one that feels chronically overlooked.

When all three are strong, the rest of the chart can carry flaws and the career still tends to flourish. When all three are weak or afflicted together, even positive rashi indicators often produce a career that feels heavy or stalled.

What do the planets mean in the D10?

Each planet in a strong D10 position colours the career in a recognisable way.

PlanetCareer flavour when well placed
SunLeadership, government or large-institution work, visibility tied to reputation
MoonPublic-facing work, retail, hospitality, healthcare, content: anything tracking a crowd's mood
MarsEngineering, technology, sports, defence, surgery: decisive, technical execution
MercuryCommunication, writing, teaching, law, trade, software: the most versatile signature
JupiterTeaching, advisory work, finance, philosophy: a guiding voice others follow
VenusArts, design, hospitality, fashion, partnerships: aesthetic sense and audience appeal
SaturnLabour, service, long projects, bureaucratic work: slow, late-blooming, durable
RahuForeign careers, technology, unconventional or newly created fields, rapid but unstable rises
KetuResearch, healing, niche specialisation: real impact that does not always look like conventional success

Which yogas matter in the D10?

A few combinations that classical commentators flag as career-shaping are worth knowing; the Yoga entry explains how a yoga is defined. Rajayoga forms when the lords of a kendra and a trikona house connect, by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange, and shows up as periods of advancement and a felt sense that the career is lifting.

A strong Sun-Saturn relationship shows good navigation of power, knowing when to lead and when to wait; at odds, it shows chronic friction with bosses or systems. Jupiter in a kendra of the D10, in dignity, is one of the most reliably positive single placements, supporting advisory, teaching or ethics-driven careers. Mars-Saturn afflictions in difficult houses are the pattern to watch for: conflict, unstable employment, friction with authority. It is a tendency to manage consciously, not a verdict.

How does dasha timing work with the D10?

The D10 is a static map, and the dasha system sets it in motion, so even the strongest D10 delivers its returns only in the periods when the relevant planets are running. The Vimshottari Dasha gives each planet a fixed number of years, Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, starting from the natal Moon's nakshatra.

When a planet strong in your D10 runs as mahadasha or antardasha lord, the career layer activates favourably. When a weak or afflicted D10 planet runs, that is when the career layer most often feels friction. Read your current dasha lord's D10 strength alongside the static chart; it tells you more about the next two or three years than any house-by-house walk on its own. Use the Dasha calculator to see which period is running.

D10 vs the 10th house of the birth chart: which do you read first?

Read the 10th house of the birth chart first, then the D10 to refine it. The 10th house answers the broad question, whether the career is service or business, public or private. The D10 answers the finer one, how that career unfolds and what it feels like from inside. The full house reading is in The Tenth House: A Career Portrait. If your work crosses borders, D10 Chart for Careers Abroad: Reading the Dasamsa as an NRI covers what dasha timing can and cannot say about a visa move.

What can the D10 not tell you?

The D10 will not give you a job title, a salary figure or the exact month of a promotion, because those depend on education, country, the economy of your generation and dozens of other factors the chart does not encode. This is a general reflection on career patterns, not investment or financial advice; consult a qualified professional before any specific financial decision. It also will not decide whether to take a specific offer: the chart is one input, and the decision remains yours. Classical sources never claimed to remove human freedom from the equation; they describe the field of probabilities that decisions fall into, not the decisions themselves.

How to check the D10 in your own chart

The D10 is sensitive to birth time. Even a few minutes' uncertainty can shift which sign rises in the divisional chart, because the D10 Lagna changes every 3 degrees of the rising degree. Get your Lagna and planetary degrees from the Lagna calculator, then use the four steps above. If you would rather have the division arithmetic done for you, the full reading at /kundli/new calculates your D10 lagna, its lord, the 10th house and your current dasha together. How to Read a Vedic Birth Chart shows where the D10 fits in a full consultation, and the neighbouring Drekkana (D3) covers the third-division reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dasamsa (D10) chart used for?

The D10 is the divisional chart read for career: the texture of professional life, the kind of organisation a native thrives in, the timing of advancement and the relationship to power and hierarchy. It refines the main chart's 10th house rather than replacing it.

How is the D10 chart calculated?

Each 30° sign divides into ten parts of 3° each. Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) count from the sign itself; even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) count from the ninth sign from it. This is the standard Parashari method most software uses.

What is the most important house in the D10 chart?

The 10th house of the D10 itself, sometimes called the career of the career, together with the D10 lagna and its lord and the Sun as the natural significator of status and recognition. These three are checked before anything else in the divisional chart.

Can the D10 chart predict my exact career path or salary?

No. It shows the texture and timing of a career, whether leadership-flavoured, advisory, technical or creative, but the specific industry, role and salary depend on education, country, economic conditions and other factors the chart does not encode. Use it to understand fit and timing, not to forecast a job title or a figure.

Which planet is the significator (karaka) for career in Vedic astrology?

The Sun is the primary karaka for career and status, and some traditions also read Saturn as a significator of labour and long-term work. A well-placed Sun in the D10, especially in the 1st, 5th, 9th or 10th house, supports a career with genuine recognition.

How do I know when my career will improve according to my D10?

Compare your D10's strong and weak planets against your current Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha. A period ruled by a planet that is well placed in your D10 tends to be a career-favourable window; a period ruled by a weak or afflicted D10 planet tends to bring more friction.
