Nadi Dosha is the heaviest flag in the eight-fold Ashtakoot Milan compatibility check, worth 8 of the 36 total points, and it is raised when both partners' birth Nakshatras fall under the same Nadi: Vata, Pitta or Kapha. Nadi scores all or nothing, so a same-Nadi pair loses all 8 points. The same classical texts also record exceptions, such as a different pada, that cancel it.
Nadi (नाडी, "channel") is also written Nadi Dosh, and its three types are Aadi, Madhya and Antya. It is not Manglik Dosha or Bhakoot Dosha, which are separate checks, and it is not a medical diagnosis. To see whether your own pair shares a Nadi, enter both birth details in Kundli Milan.
Nadi Dosha is all-or-nothing — 8 points gained or lost on a single check — which is why families treat it as more decisive than any other koota.

What is Nadi Dosha, and why does it cost 8 points?
Nadi is one of the eight kootas in the Ashtakoot Milan, the traditional eight-fold matching system used in Indian arranged-marriage conversations. In order of weight, the eight are Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8), which add up to 36. Each of the 27 Nakshatras belongs to one of three Nadis, mapped to the Ayurvedic doshas: Aadi Nadi (Vata, the airy and mobile channel), Madhya Nadi (Pitta, the fiery and transformative channel) and Antya Nadi (Kapha, the earthy and grounding channel). If the two Moon-Nakshatras fall under the same Nadi, the dosha is present and all 8 points are lost on that line.
The classical reasoning is that Nadi evaluates constitutional compatibility, the Ayurvedic prakriti of two people about to build a household and, traditionally, raise children. Commentators held that two charts of the same constitutional type risk reduced fertility, weaker-constitution offspring and a marriage where neither temperament balances the other. This is a classical framing of constitutional theory, not a medical claim. For any concern about fertility or health, a qualified medical professional is the right person to consult, not a compatibility chart.
Which Nakshatras belong to which Nadi?
Each Nadi holds nine Nakshatras. The table follows the classical grouping used by this site's match engine.
The grouping is not a simple cycle of three, so do not work it out by counting Nakshatras.
Why does Nadi Dosha carry so much weight?
Three things make Nadi land harder on families than any other koota. It is framed as biological rather than temperamental, unlike Varna, Vashya or Gana, which speak to social and psychological fit. It has almost no partial credit: Graha Maitri can score 3 of 5 and Yoni 2 of 4, but Nadi is 8 or 0, and only Bhakoot shares that all-or-nothing scoring. That makes it read as a verdict rather than a data point.
And generations of practice have trained matchmakers to check the Nadi line first, so when it fails, the conversation about the rest of the chart often never happens.
What are the classical exceptions that cancel Nadi Dosha?
The same tradition that set the Nadi rule also records when it is set aside, collectively called the Nadi Dosha Parihara. These are not modern workarounds; they appear in the same body of literature as the rule.
Same Nakshatra, different Pada. If both partners share a Nakshatra but fall in different Padas, the four quarters of each Nakshatra at 3°20′ each, several traditions hold the dosha cancelled, since each Pada corresponds to a different Navamsa sign and carries a distinct constitutional emphasis.
Same Rashi, different Nakshatras. If both Moons share a sign but fall in different Nakshatras within it, several commentaries cancel the dosha on the reasoning that the shared sign places both charts in a broadly similar energetic field.
Exact Nakshatra-and-Pada match. When both Moons fall in the same Nakshatra and the same Pada, some commentators read the pairing as unusually resonant rather than afflicted. This is not universal, so ask an astrologer whether their tradition recognises it.
Strong Graha Maitri and a high overall score. If Graha Maitri, the planetary friendship between the two Moon-sign lords, is strong and the Ashtakoot score without Nadi is high, several commentators allow the match to proceed. One commonly quoted threshold is 24 or more of the 28 points that remain when Nadi is excluded.
Prescribed remediation. Where no structural exception applies, the tradition prescribes remediation rather than automatic rejection: recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, specific pujas at the wedding muhurta, and donations of milk and grain. These are framed as conscious engagement with the concern, not a guaranteed fix.
How to find out whether your pair has Nadi Dosha
Finding out takes four steps.
Find each partner's Moon Nakshatra with the Nakshatra finder, using exact birth date, time and place. The Moon changes Nakshatra about every day, so an approximate time can give the wrong one.
Look up each Nakshatra's Nadi in the table above. Different Nadis mean Nadi scores 8 and there is no dosha.
If the Nadis are the same, check whether the Nakshatra is also the same (then check the Pada) or only the Nadi is shared (then a narrower set of exceptions applies).
Compute the Ashtakoot score without Nadi, where the maximum becomes 28, and check the Graha Maitri between the two Moon-sign lords. Kundli Milan shows all eight scores at once.
If two or more of these come back favourable, the textual basis to proceed with the standard remediation is real. If the same Nadi is confirmed, no exception applies and the wider score is also weak, the chart is asking for a slower look at the 7th-house strength in both charts and the dasha timing of the wedding, not an automatic rejection.
Ask which of these has actually been checked before accepting a flat "Nadi Dosha, match cancelled". Many quick checks compare only the Nadi label and never ask whether the underlying Nakshatras are identical, which triggers the Pada exception, or merely share a Nadi by coincidence. Conflating the two is the most common shortcut that turns a workable match into a rejected one.
What are the classical texts actually protecting against?
They are protecting against two very similar constitutions combining in one household. The classical writers reasoned about constitutional harmony before modern medicine could speak to fertility or offspring health, and they used the Ayurvedic tridosha framework, the best physiological model available, to encode that caution. It is worth taking seriously as inherited wisdom about temperament and pacing in a shared household, without treating it as a literal medical prediction. A same-Nadi couple who read it as "we may need to work harder at balancing our shared tendencies", not "we are constitutionally doomed", are reading the tradition the way its more careful commentators intended.
Is Nadi Dosha the whole compatibility verdict?
No. Nadi is one line in a 36-point system. A Nadi failure costs 8 points, but the other 28 still describe the rest of the marriage: temperament (Varna, Gana), mutual adjustment (Vashya), physical compatibility (Yoni), planetary friendship (Graha Maitri) and welfare (Bhakoot). A chart that loses Nadi but scores well elsewhere is a different case from one that loses on Nadi and is weak elsewhere. Ashtakoot Milan (Guna Milan): 36 Points Explained shows the full breakdown, and Low Ashtakoot Score: Can a Match Under 18 Still Work? covers what to do with a low total.
It is the heaviest of the eight Ashtakoot Milan checks, worth 8 of 36 points, and it is raised when both partners' birth Nakshatras fall under the same Nadi category: Vata, Pitta or Kapha. It is scored as all 8 points or none, with no partial credit, and the classical texts list several exceptions.
Can Nadi Dosha be cancelled?
Yes. Classical exceptions include sharing the same Nakshatra but a different Pada, sharing the same Moon sign but different Nakshatras, and a strong overall Milan score with friendly planetary lords even when the Nadi itself matches. Ask an astrologer which of these your tradition accepts, since commentators differ.
How many points is Nadi Dosha worth?
Eight out of the 36 total points in the Ashtakoot Milan, the single largest of the eight kootas, ahead of Bhakoot (7) and Graha Maitri (5). Because it is all or nothing, a same-Nadi pair caps the total at 28 points.
Is Nadi Dosha more serious than Manglik Dosha?
They measure different things and are not directly comparable. Nadi is a fixed 8-point line inside the Ashtakoot scoring system, while Manglik Dosha is a separate check on Mars's house placement. Both carry real classical weight, and both have documented cancellation conditions that casual matchmaking often skips.
What happens if Nadi Dosha cannot be cancelled?
The classical tradition prescribes remediation, such as specific mantras, pujas at the wedding and charitable donations, instead of automatic rejection. It also asks for a more careful look at the rest of the Ashtakoot score and the 7th-house strength in both charts before any decision is made.
Does the same Nakshatra always mean Nadi Dosha?
Yes, sharing a Nakshatra means sharing its Nadi, since each Nakshatra belongs to exactly one Nadi. But a shared Nakshatra also opens the door to the Pada-based exception, which does not apply when two different Nakshatras merely happen to share a Nadi category.
