Core concept

Lagna

Lagna is the ascendant in Vedic astrology: the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. It becomes the 1st house of the birth chart, and all twelve houses are counted from it in order. Because the rising sign changes about every two hours, the Lagna is the part of a chart that depends most on an accurate birth time.

Lagna is also spelled Lagnam (the South Indian form) or Lagan, and is called the ascendant, rising sign or Udaya Lagna in English; in Devanagari it is लग्न. It is not your Moon sign (Rashi) or Sun sign, and it is not the same as Chandra Lagna, which counts houses from the Moon instead.

What is Lagna in astrology?

The Lagna, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. It becomes the 1st house of the kundli, and every other house counts outward from it in order — the 7th house is always the sign opposite the Lagna, the 10th is always nine signs ahead, and so on. Alongside the Moon sign and the Sun sign, the Lagna is one of three primary reference points in a chart, and many practitioners treat it as the most personal of the three because it is unique to the birth moment rather than shared by everyone born that month or day. How is Lagna calculated?

The Lagna comes from the birth time and place: Earth's rotation carries the whole zodiac past the horizon once a day, so the ascendant advances through all twelve signs roughly every 24 hours, about one sign every two hours. The astronomical calculation converts the local birth time to sidereal time, then finds the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon for that latitude and applies the ayanamsa to give the sidereal sign. That pace means even a 15-30 minute error near a sign boundary can shift the Lagna into a neighbouring sign and reshuffle every house in the chart, which is why a documented birth time (a hospital record over family memory, where they differ) is worth tracking down.

Lagna vs Moon sign vs Sun sign

These three placements answer different questions and can easily be three different signs for the same person. The Lagna frames outward approach and the house structure. The Moon's Rashi — what a Vedic astrologer usually means by "your sign" — reflects the emotional and mental disposition and sets the Vimshottari Dasha timing. The Sun sign, closer to the everyday Western zodiac sign, relates to core identity and, in some traditions, to father figures and authority. None of the three replaces the other two.

Why does the Lagna decide the whole chart?

Because the whole house sequence is counted from it, the Lagna sign decides which planet rules which house for that individual chart — the same graha can be a fortunate house lord in one Lagna and a difficult one in another. The Lagna and its ruling planet, the Lagna lord, are read together as an indicator of general constitution, temperament, and how a person tends to approach the world, distinct from the more emotional, private reading given to the Moon sign. A strong, well-aspected Lagna lord is generally read as favouring vitality and a coherent sense of self, though always alongside the rest of the chart. The first-house portrait goes into that reading in depth.

Lagna at a glance

  • The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth.
  • The Lagna becomes the 1st house, and the other eleven houses follow it in zodiac order.
  • The 7th house is always the sign opposite the Lagna, and the 10th house is the sign nine places ahead of it.
  • The Lagna advances through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, roughly one sign every two hours on average.
  • Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign are three separate reference points and are often three different signs.
  • Chandra Lagna means counting the houses from the Moon's sign instead of from the ascendant.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'Lagna' mean in a kundli?

Lagna is the Sanskrit term for the ascendant: the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. It becomes the 1st house of the chart and sets the numbering for every other house, so it is usually the first thing an astrologer works out.

What is Lagnam?

Lagnam is the South Indian spelling and pronunciation of Lagna. It means exactly the same thing: the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. In Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam usage it is the first item read from a horoscope, and everything else in the chart is counted from it.

Is Lagna the same as my zodiac sign?

Not necessarily. Vedic astrology tracks three separate sign placements — Lagna, Moon sign, and Sun sign — and it is common for a person to have three different signs, none more "correct" than the others. They answer different questions, and the Moon sign is the one people usually mean by "my rashi".

How much does birth time actually affect my Lagna?

Quite a lot. The Lagna moves through the entire zodiac roughly once every 24 hours, changing sign about every two hours. Near a sign boundary, even a 15-30 minute error in recorded birth time can shift the ascendant into the neighbouring sign and change every house position that follows from it.

What is a Lagna chart, and is it different from a kundli?

"Lagna chart" and "kundli" (or "rashi chart") usually refer to the same diagram: the birth chart with houses counted from the ascendant. Some traditions distinguish a Lagna-based house count from a Moon-based one (Chandra Lagna), but everyday use of "Lagna chart" simply means the main birth chart.

How do I find my Lagna?

Use a Lagna calculator with your date, exact time and birth city; it returns the sidereal ascendant for that moment. Without a birth time the Lagna cannot be found, because the rising sign changes about every two hours, so an approximate time near a sign boundary can give the wrong sign.
