What your Manglik result means

In Vedic astrology, Manglik Dosha (also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha) is noted when Mars occupies certain houses of the birth chart. It comes up mostly in marriage and chart matching. It describes a placement in the chart. It is not a statement about your character, and it is one factor among many that an astrologer weighs.

A "Yes" here means Mars is in one of the listed houses from the Lagna, from the Moon, or from both. A "No" means it is in none of them. If you are Manglik, the calculator also lists any classical cancellations that apply to your chart — these are the conditions traditions cite as softening the placement.

If you do not know your birth time, only the Moon-based check is shown. The Lagna depends on the exact time of birth, so the Lagna-based check and the cancellations that rely on it are left out rather than guessed.

How to check Manglik Dosha by hand

  1. Find the sign of your Lagna (the rising sign at birth), the sign your Moon occupied, and the sign Mars occupied. These need a birth chart or an ephemeris; the calculator finds them from your birth details.
  2. Count houses in whole signs from the Lagna: the Lagna sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Count from the Lagna sign to Mars’s sign to get Mars’s house.
  3. Repeat the count from the Moon sign, treating the Moon sign as the 1st house.
  4. If Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, from the Moon, or from both, the chart is Manglik in the version this calculator uses.
  5. Check the cancellations: Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn; Jupiter in the same sign as Mars, or Mars’s sign being the 5th, 7th or 9th sign counted from Jupiter’s sign; the Moon in Mars’s sign; or the Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the Lagna.

How this calculator decides

  • Houses are counted in the whole-sign system: the sign rising at birth (the Lagna) is the 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd, and so on. For the Moon-based check, the Moon’s sign is counted as the 1st house.
  • Manglik is reported when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, or from the Moon.
  • Traditions differ on the exact list. Some leave out the 2nd house, and some also count Mars from Venus. This calculator uses the set above and does not count from Venus.

Cancellations it checks

  • Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), or exalted in Capricorn.
  • Jupiter is in the same sign as Mars, or aspects it (the 5th, 7th or 9th sign from Jupiter).
  • The Moon is in the same sign as Mars.
  • The Moon is in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Lagna.

Why does my result depend on my birth time?

The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, and the Mars-from-Lagna check moves with it. Without a birth time, only the check from the Moon is shown, and even that can vary if the Moon changes sign during your birth date.
