The Bhamsa (D27) chart is the divisional chart that divides each sign into twenty-seven parts of 1°06′40″ to show bala, constitutional strength. It reads strength as four separate registers: physical vitality, bodily endurance, mental stamina and emotional resilience. It describes what a person has to draw on, not what will happen to them.
The Bhamsa (भांश) is also called the Saptavimshamsa, the Nakshatramsa or D-27, and it is the twenty-seventh-part varga in the system laid out in Reading the Divisional Charts. It is a layer of your birth chart, not a separate horoscope. A chart can be strong in one register and thin in another, which the D27 alone is built to show.
The D27 divides each sign into twenty-seven parts, one for each nakshatra, to read strength in finer grain than the main chart allows.

What does the D27 chart measure?
The D27 measures the kind of strength a person has, not merely how much. Bala is usually translated as "strength," and the translation loses most of what the word covers. It spans physical endurance, the steadiness of a mind under pressure, the capacity to absorb emotional demand without being drained by it, and plain vitality, the difference between being well and merely not being ill. English asks one word to hold all four; the D27 exists because the classical tradition declined to.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists the D27 among the sixteen divisional charts and assigns it specifically to bala. Its construction anchors the twenty-seven divisions on the four elements, which are the categories the tradition uses to think about constitution: fire for drive and vitality, earth for bodily substance, air for mental and communicative recovery, water for emotional flexibility. A chart built on that rotation says which kind of strength a person has.
How to calculate the D27 chart
Each thirty-degree sign divides into twenty-seven equal parts of 1°06′40″ (1.1111°), twenty-seven to a sign, twelve signs, 324 divisions across the zodiac. The count is exact rather than approximate: one D27 division per nakshatra, which is the source of the name Nakshatramsa. Charts on this site use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha and the Swiss Ephemeris; the method is described under /tools.
Enter your birth date, time and place in the Lagna calculator to get the sign and degree of your Lagna and every planet.
Divide the degree inside the sign by 1.1111 and round up. That is the part number, from 1 to 27.
Pick the anchor by the element of the occupied sign. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) count from Aries. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) count from Cancer. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) count from Libra. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) count from Capricorn.
Count forward from the anchor by the part number, counting the anchor as 1 and wrapping through the zodiac. That sign is the D27 sign.
A worked example. The Sun at 17°22′ Taurus. Taurus is an earth sign, so counting starts from Cancer. 17°22′ is 17.3667°, and 17.3667 ÷ 1.1111 = 15.63, which rounds up to part 16. Counting sixteen signs from Cancer, counting Cancer as 1, lands on Libra. The Sun's D27 placement is Libra, its sign of debilitation. In the main chart the Sun in Taurus is unremarkable and gives no reason to worry about vitality; the division says the constitutional reserve behind that ordinary-looking Sun is thinner than it appears, and this native typically functions normally day to day but recovers slowly from anything genuinely demanding.
The four anchors (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are the four movable signs, and that is the fastest way to catch an error: if an anchor you have been given for the D27 is not one of the four movable signs, the rule has been misremembered. Cancer for earth and Capricorn for water are the two most commonly swapped.
What should you read first in a D27 chart?
Three placements carry most of the weight: the D27 lagna, the Sun and the Moon.
The D27 lagna sets the register in which strength naturally operates. A fire lagna handles sudden demand well but can burn out; an earth lagna builds slowly and outlasts everyone but resists pivoting; an air lagna draws strength from articulation and other people but can talk instead of act; a water lagna goes around obstacles rather than through them but tends toward avoidance. None is better than the others; each fails in its own characteristic way.
The Sun shows vital force, the animating warmth the tradition calls prana. Well placed (own sign, exaltation, a friendly sign, an angle or trine), it describes someone who recovers from illness quickly and sustains demanding stretches without visible cost. Afflicted, it describes vitality that has to be maintained deliberately rather than assumed.
The Moon shows receptive strength: the capacity to absorb emotional and mental demand without being depleted by it. Strong and well placed, demand is absorbed and processed. Afflicted, it tends to be absorbed and retained instead, a common mechanism behind chronic exhaustion with no obvious physical cause.
The Sun and Moon are usually read together, because the asymmetric charts are the informative ones. A vigorous Sun paired with a beleaguered Moon in the D27 often describes someone whose body keeps going long after their patience has run out.
How does the D27 show mental and emotional strength?
Mental stamina is read from Mercury and the third house of the D27, and emotional resilience from the Moon and the fourth house. Reducing the D27 to a body chart is the single most common way to waste it. Mercury and the third house carry the ability to hold concentration across long, demanding work and recover from intellectual fatigue, which is not the same as intelligence. The Moon and the fourth house carry whether the native has an inner floor to stand on when things get difficult.
The combination is what is worth reading. A strong mental register with weak emotional footing produces people who can describe their own difficulty with clinical precision and still cannot move inside it. Strong emotional footing with a weak mental register produces people who weather things well without being able to name the shape of what they are weathering. Neither shows up in the main birth chart.
What does a worked D27 lagna look like?
Take a native with the Lagna at 3°10′ Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a fire sign, so counting starts from Aries. 3°10′ is 3.1667°, and 3.1667 ÷ 1.1111 = 2.85, which rounds up to part 3. Three signs from Aries, counting Aries as 1, lands on Gemini. A Gemini D27 lagna is air: strength that works through conversation and people, its lord Mercury deciding whether that register is readily available. Set against the fire rashi Lagna, this is a native who presents as energetic and forward-driving but whose actual resilience runs through explanation and the people they can reach. Rest, for this person, is not solitude.
What can the D27 chart not tell you?
The D27 describes constitution, not events. It says what a native has to draw on; it does not say what will happen to them, when, or with what outcome. A D27 read for a specific health prediction is being asked a question the classical sources themselves were careful not to ask of it. For any actual health concern, see a qualified medical professional; nothing in this chart substitutes for that.
What survives translation cleanly is the comparative claim: the kind of resilience a person has is distinct from the amount, and the two are independent. Most people can verify this against their own experience within a minute, since everyone knows someone physically formidable and psychologically fragile, and someone who is the reverse. The main birth chart cannot separate them; the D27 was built to.
How does dasha timing test the D27?
Bala is tested unevenly across a lifetime, and the Vimshottari Dasha sequence says when. The Sun's six-year Mahadasha puts vitality itself in the foreground; the Moon's ten years do the same for the receptive, recuperative register. The Saturn Mahadasha, nineteen years and the longest in the sequence, tests everything the D27 records regardless of what it records, and most reliably finds a constitution's actual floor.
The D27 is one of the more birth-time-sensitive divisional charts, since each division spans just over a degree; a Lagna or planet near a part boundary is worth checking against your birth record. Get your degrees from the Lagna calculator and apply the four steps above. Frequently asked questions
What is the D27 chart in astrology?
The D27, also called Bhamsa or Nakshatramsa, is one of the sixteen classical divisional charts. It divides each sign into twenty-seven parts and is assigned to bala, constitutional strength across physical, bodily, mental and emotional registers, rather than a single measure of vitality.
How is the D27 chart calculated?
Each 30° sign is divided into twenty-seven parts of 1°06′40″. Fire signs count from Aries, earth signs from Cancer, air signs from Libra and water signs from Capricorn. Divide the degree by 1.1111, round up, and count that many signs from the anchor to find the D27 sign.
What does a strong D27 lagna mean?
It describes which register a native's strength naturally operates in: fast and driven for a fire lagna, slow and enduring for earth, articulate and people-based for air, or flexible and avoidant of direct obstacles for water. None is inherently stronger, and each has its own characteristic way of failing under pressure.
Can the D27 chart predict health problems?
No. Classical sources describe the D27 as showing constitutional reserves, meaning what a person has to draw on, not specific medical events or outcomes. For any actual health concern the chart is not a substitute for consulting a qualified medical professional, whatever it shows.
Why is the D27 also called Nakshatramsa?
Because its twenty-seven divisions correspond exactly to the twenty-seven nakshatras, one division per nakshatra. This gives the D27 a granularity finer than a plain sign-based reading of the same planet, and the name records the count rather than any link to a planet's nakshatra placement.
How is the D27 different from the main birth chart?
The main chart (rashi) gives one overall impression of a planet's condition. The D27 refines that single impression into four separate strength registers, so two natives who look similar in the rashi chart can show very different constitutional pictures once the D27 is read alongside it.
