How to calculate the D24 chart
Each thirty-degree sign divides into twenty-four parts of 1°15′, and the anchor for counting depends on whether the occupied sign is odd or even, not on its element or type. Divide the degree inside the sign by 1.25 and round up. That is the part number, from 1 to 24.
Pick the anchor by parity. Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) count from Leo. Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) count from Cancer.
Count forward from the anchor by the part number, counting the anchor as 1 and wrapping through the zodiac. That sign is the D24 sign.
A worked example. A Lagna at 8°30′ Virgo. Virgo is even, so counting starts from Cancer. 8.5 ÷ 1.25 = 6.8, which rounds up to part 7. Seven signs from Cancer, counting Cancer as 1, lands on Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. Set against a Virgo rashi Lagna the gap is immediate: Virgo presents as quick, precise and analytically fluent, and this native reads as bright in a first conversation, while Capricorn learns slowly and structurally, by building.
This rule has a different shape from neighbouring divisions such as the D10, which sort by odd/even and then count from the sign itself or its ninth sign. Mixing the two rule shapes is the most common way to build the D24 wrong.
Why is the D24 read for learning?
The two anchors, Leo and Cancer, are the Sun's and Moon's own signs, and that is not incidental. The Sun is the significator of atma-buddhi, the intelligence that belongs to the person rather than to their training, what lets a student see the point rather than just reproduce an argument. The Moon is manas, the receptive faculty that takes an impression in and holds it. Learning needs both, and they fail independently: a strong Sun without a strong Moon understands everything and retains none of it; a strong Moon without a strong Sun retains everything and understands little. Which four positions carry the D24 reading?

The D24 lagna is the native's learning register. Mercury's signs give analytical precision and language facility; Jupiter's give depth received through a teacher; Venus's give learning through relationship and the arts; the Sun's give confident, self-directed study; the Moon's give receptive, contemplative learning; Saturn's give slow structural learning that outlasts everyone else's; Mars's give combative, foundation-impatient learning. Where the D24 lagna differs from the rashi lagna, the native learns in a way their outward presentation does not advertise, a frequent source of being misjudged by teachers.

The 9th house carries higher study and the relationship to a teaching lineage. Mercury and Jupiter are the two significators throughout: Mercury for analysis, Jupiter for depth and transmission. What does a worked D24 chart look like?
Take the native above, with the Lagna at 8°30′ Virgo (D24 lagna Capricorn), Mercury at 21°45′ Libra and Jupiter at 14°20′ Pisces.
The Lagna. Capricorn learns slowly and structurally. Together with the Virgo rashi Lagna it describes a student who appears faster than they actually learn: teachers set the pace to the presentation, the native falls behind it, and everyone concludes something is wrong. Nothing is; the pace is wrong.
Mercury. Libra is odd, so counting starts from Leo. 21.75 ÷ 1.25 = 17.4, which rounds up to part 18. Eighteen signs from Leo wraps around to Capricorn, the D24 lagna itself. Mercury sits in the first house of the learning chart, in Saturn's sign: the analytic faculty is real and is the native's front door, but it is built the slow way rather than the fast one.
Jupiter. Pisces is even, so counting starts from Cancer. 14.333 ÷ 1.25 = 11.47, which rounds up to part 12. How should you use the D24 today?
Use it diagnostically, not predictively. The classical frame assumed a teacher-student transmission over decades; almost none of that describes how most people are educated today. What does not translate is equating vidya with attainment, since credentials now measure institutional throughput, which correlates with fit far more closely than with learning itself. What translates cleanly is the fit reading: a person's relationship to formal systems is a separate variable from their capacity, which modern education assumes constantly without having language for. A native whose academic record sits well below their evident ability often finds something specific here, and it can reframe years of self-blame.
The honest question is not "will this student succeed", which depends on institutions the chart knows nothing about, but "why has this route not worked, and what route would."
What are the common misreadings of the D24?
Reading the D24 as a verdict on ability is the most common misuse. The chart addresses fit between a native and a system, and using it to tell a capable student they are not academic inverts what the classical sources, writing for and about scholars, intended. It also cannot predict examination results or admissions, which depend on institutions and competition the chart does not encode. And it should not be read without the rashi: a supportive D24 against a weak 4th and 5th house in the main chart describes potential the practical educational life never drew on.
