Nadi Dosha

Nadi Dosha is the flag raised in Ashtakoot matching when both partners' Moon Nakshatras fall under the same Nadi: Aadi, Madhya or Antya, linked to the Ayurvedic types Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Nadi is worth 8 of the 36 points, the most of any factor, and it scores all or nothing: 8 points if the Nadis differ and 0 if they match. Classical texts list conditions that cancel it.

Nadi is also spelled Naadi, and in Devanagari is written नाड़ी (नाड़ी दोष). It is not "Nadi astrology", the palm-leaf tradition of South India, which is a different practice, and it is not Bhakoot Dosha, which compares the two Moon signs rather than the two Nakshatras.

What is Nadi Dosha?

Nadi (नाड़ी, "channel") is the eighth and heaviest of the eight factors in the Ashtakoot Milan. Each of the 27 Nakshatras belongs to one of three Nadis, and when the two partners' Moon Nakshatras share a Nadi the factor scores zero and Nadi Dosha is said to be present. The classical reasoning is constitutional: two very similar Ayurvedic types were held to combine poorly in a household. This is a traditional framing, not a medical claim.

Which Nakshatras belong to which Nadi?

Aadi Nadi (Vata) holds Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Madhya Nadi (Pitta) holds Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada. Antya Nadi (Kapha) holds Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati. Nine Nakshatras sit in each. Your Moon Nakshatra comes from the Nakshatra calculator.

How does Nadi Dosha scoring work?

Nadi is binary. If the two Moon Nakshatras are in different Nadis the couple scores the full 8 points, and if they share a Nadi they score 0, with no partial credit. A Nadi zero therefore caps the Ashtakoot total at 28. Because it is all-or-nothing and framed as biological, it often reads as a verdict, yet the other seven factors still describe the rest of the match. The free Guna Milan shows every factor, and Nadi Dosha: a closer look covers the reasoning.

Which exceptions cancel Nadi Dosha?

Classical commentary lists several conditions, though traditions apply them differently. Commonly cited ones are the same Nakshatra but different Padas, the same Rashi but different Nakshatras, strong Graha Maitri together with a high score on the other factors, and, in some traditions, an exact Nakshatra-and-Pada match. Where no exception applies, the tradition prescribes remedial practice rather than automatic rejection. Ashtakoot: when a low score still works shows how such cases turn out.

  • Nadi is worth 8 of the 36 Ashtakoot points, the largest single factor.
  • Nadi scores all or nothing: 8 points if the Nadis differ, 0 if they are the same.
  • A Nadi score of zero caps the Ashtakoot total at 28 out of 36.
  • Each Nadi holds nine of the 27 Nakshatras.
  • Classical exceptions include the same Nakshatra with different Padas, and the same Rashi with different Nakshatras.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nadi Dosha?

Nadi Dosha is a flag in Ashtakoot Milan, raised when both partners’ Moon Nakshatras fall under the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). It costs all 8 points of the Nadi factor, the largest in the 36-point system, and is one of the most discussed compatibility flags in Vedic matchmaking.

Which Nakshatras belong to which Nadi?

Each Nadi holds nine of the 27 Nakshatras. Aadi: Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada. Madhya: Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada. Antya: Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati.

Can Nadi Dosha be cancelled?

Classical sources list conditions under which it is set aside, such as the same Nakshatra with different Padas, or the same Rashi with different Nakshatras, and some add strong Graha Maitri with a high overall score. Regional traditions apply these with different strictness, so it is worth asking which exceptions an astrologer has actually checked.

How many points is Nadi in Ashtakoot?

Eight of 36, the highest weight among the eight factors, followed by Bhakoot at 7. Nadi is binary, so a couple gets either all 8 points or none. A same-Nadi couple therefore has a maximum possible total of 28, while the remaining seven factors are scored as usual.

Is Nadi Dosha the same as Nadi astrology?

No. Nadi Dosha is one factor of Ashtakoot matching, based on the Nadi group of each partner’s Moon Nakshatra. Nadi astrology is a separate South Indian tradition of readings from palm-leaf manuscripts. The two share only the word Nadi, which means channel.

  • Ashtakoot

Ashtakoot is the 8-factor compatibility scoring system of Vedic matchmaking (Milan): Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Each factor scores 0 to its maximum, and the total out of 36 is the headline number.

  • Bhakoot Dosha

Bhakoot Dosha is the flag raised when the Bhakoot factor of Ashtakoot scores zero, because the two Moon signs sit in a problematic relative position — specifically 6/8 or 9/5 from each other (2/12 also scores zero). Modern practice considers many mitigants before treating it as disqualifying.
